“It would have been easy”, says Kay Segler president of BMW’s M division,” to build another uber performance car, but we perceived a need for a less expensive model for the younger enthusiast.”
When building the super coupe, M Division paid close attention to the curb weight. An aluminum-intensive suspension similar to the M3’s was adapted to keep it light and bring the 1 Series M Coupe well under the weight of a stock 135i. An inline 6 engine graces the latest M, which produces 335 HP. Thanks to the lighter body weighing 400 pounds less, this does wonders for the 1 Series M Coupe’s track times. A broader stance also distinguishes the new M, as well as the significantly modified front grille, quad tailpipes and larger scoops which feed cool air to the front brakes. It will be available in three colors: black, white and a memorable Valencia orange. The orange model will also be complimented by matching orange stitching on the black upholstery.
South Florida has always been a region with a heavy emphasis on car customization. It’s part of that liberal spirit that comes with the sunshine. The 2011 BMW 1 Series M should lure plenty of young engineers away from the temptations of other brands and get them under the hood of the finest Germany has to offer. We’re banking this is going to be a huge success for BMW in the South Florida tuning culture. And you only have to wait until May to see it!
