So what makes a BMW "Vintage" you might ask? The BMW Vintage Car Club of America considers Vintage Cars to be those built from 1927-1941 and Classic Cars to be those built from 1953-1965. BMW has a history much longer and more storied than most automotive makers. In the 1930's BMW produced the 328 roadster which, much like its beginnings, was a legend of sports car racing history. After cessation of production during the war years of the 1940's, the 1950's BMW brought along the BMW 507 which today represents the one of a collectors most prized possessions. The 1960's birthed a BMW so good that it would eventually become the blueprint for every BMW made over the next three decades, this was the New Class. The 1970's saw the introduction of the 5 series (E12) and the 80's the 3 series (E30).
So what is "the" model to have? Well, as you could guess, it depends on what you are looking for. For illustrious chrome bumpers and round taillights, seek out a 2002 built before 1974. The 2002tii is also known for unmatched performance and steadfast value. Looking for elegant and fast? Look no further than the 3.0CSi built from 1971-1975.
As always, when buying something you are unfamiliar with- ask the advice of an expert before purchase. At first blush though, look for cooling problems in particular, as well as cracked and warped cylinder heads and of course, rust.
