Vista BMW Explores Unleaded vs. Premium

To those who drive vehicles which only require, by the owners manual, regular unleaded fuel the saving differential between regular and premium unleaded is tremendous.

If your car only requires regular unleaded gas, then that is all it truly needs to prevent knocking and/or pinging. Knocking/pinging refers to the sound that is made when a lower grade of gas than necessary is put into the car causing the energy from the spark plugs to collide with the energy from the pre-ignition. Most cars built after 1996, are produced with a "knock sensor" to prevent knocking, provided that the load is not too great. Although, with today's technology, you may not hear the knock, it is still there, affecting the efficiency of your car's engine.

BMWs however, were made for efficiency, power and speed, and putting the highest quality factory recommended, premium fuel in your car will extend its life and performance exponentially. Compared to regular gas, high-octane gas requires a higher temperature and pressure to ignite, so it can withstand higher compression without reigniting.
